7 Zero-Waste Halloween Decor Ideas

September 18, 2018 by Wildwood & Sage 1 Comment

Get ready for Halloween with style and an eco-friendly approach. Halloween can be just as spooky with zero-waste Halloween decor as the traditional store-bought decor items. If you want to celebrate Halloween without the waste this year, try these zero-waste home decor ideas!

7 Zero-Waste Halloween Decor Ideas

1| Real Pumpkins

The traditional jack-o-lantern is the perfect symbol of Halloween and inherently zero-waste! Carve your pumpkin and compost it when Halloween is over. You get the fun of creating your own personalized jack-o-lantern without the waste of buying a plastic one. As an added bonus you can easily roast your pumpkin seeds for a healthy & delicious snack! Your store bought decor can’t do that!

2 | Gourdes

You can find some amazing, and funky looking gourds this time of year. Gnarly and bumpy, warty-looking gourdes of all shapes, sizes, and colors are perfect for adding some creepiness to your Halloween decor. Like real pumpkins, they are compostable and won’t take forever to disappear in a landfill. Try natural gourdes for a Halloween accent piece.

3 | Seasonal Flowers

Mums are a beautiful accent to any fall home decor. These long-lasting flowers are essential seasonal blooms that can add pops of color to your Halloween (or any other Fall holiday) decor. They come in festive yellows and oranges, as well as other colors like purple. Visit your local nursery to find beautiful seasonal flowers that you can use indoors or outdoors for your zero-waste Halloween decor.

4 | Corn

Corn comes in all colors, from white to yellow, to multicolored. Tie a bundle to your door for seasonal color (and a treat for your native birds and critters), or add it to your tablescape. Dried corn is a festive way to add seasonal color and texture to your Halloween home decor. I don’t know about you but mine usually gets eaten by the wildlife before it goes bad, it is a long-lasting, low mess way to decorate your home for Halloween.

5 | Straw Scarecrows.

Making a straw scarecrow is easy! Get some straw, take some old jeans and a shirt and stuff it with straw. Add a pumpkin or jack-o-lantern head and maybe a hat and a pitch-fork and you have the perfect seasonal scarecrow made from natural and reusable materials! Rebuild your scarecrow year after year, with only the cost of some straw and a small pumpkin. When your scarecrow’s time is over you can use your straw in your garden or compost, and save the clothing for next year.

6 | Apples, Pomegranates, and Pears

Long-lasting seasonal fruits like apples, pomegranates, and pears all make wonderful fall home decor. My favorite way to use them simply place them in a nice wooden bowl as a centerpiece on my table. It’s an easy and affordable, rustic centerpiece.

7 | Cheesecloth Ghosts

A long time ago, I made a ghost named Kenny. He hangs until this very day in my childhood room. Kenny is a cheesecloth ghost, and it’s very easy to make your very own ghost. Take one ball (you can use any material that’s relatively light like paper mache, bunched up paper, or styrofoam balls) and then cover it with cheesecloth. Let the cheesecloth hang down long and unevenly across the ball. Take some white thread and tie the cheesecloth around the ball. Add googly eyes, or draw on your own eyes with a black marker. That’s it you have your ghost! Give him or her a name and hang it up to spook your friends & family. My Kenny is about 30 years old, take care of your ghost and it will last you many a Halloween.

Make your Halloween home decor zero-waste this year. By choosing natural materials and using a little DIY you can make your own Halloween zero-waste home decor that makes this Halloween a spooktastic one to remember.

These are wonderful ideas! I had a late start to Halloween decorations this year, whoops! These are nice in that I can still use them last minute and eat them later ๐Ÿ˜‰ I did make some zero waste halloween decorations this weekend, but they were snack food, so they were gobbled right up ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s my friend who wrote about those zero waste halloween treats: https://permacrafters.com/zero-waste-halloween-ideas/
