Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. While searching for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift you are inundated with pink heart covered everything. Does Valentine’s Day really need to be another holiday marked by consumer excess? No! By making informed decisions you can give your Valentine a gift they will love, and that actually will make the world a better place. Advertising would have you think that your Valentine wants chocolates, candy, and flowers! While that may be true, there is a whole world of gifts out there that aren’t being blasted continually on TV and media. Why not give your Valentine a gift that will not only make them feel amazing, but help other’s too?
Does your Valentine really need more stuff? Or would they appreciate something that has a bit more value? No everyone is the same, but if your Valentine is anything like me (and since you are interested in my blog here, there’s a good chance they are) they probably already have enough “stuff” and would much rather money spent on another thing be spent on something that creates lasting change.
What Valentine’s Day Gift Makes the World Better?
A gift to a charity. Donating to a worthy cause close to your Valentine’s heart in their name is the perfect way do something nice for your Valentine and others. Instead of supporting the consumerist machine that has taken over Valentines Day and buying a pink thing, you can help your Valentine do good. After all, Valentines Day is all about love, and there is no better way of spreading the love than helping others.
Some charities even have special Valentine’s Day promotions. One of my favorite charities (if you follow my Facebook page you’ve seen me plug them) The Odd Cat Sanctuary is doing the best Valentine’s Day promotion I have seen! Donate and send a Valentine to one of their kitties! As a cat lover, and human to several odd cats (each odd in their own wonderful way) this idea jumped out at me, OF COURSE I want to send a Valentine to those cats!
How to Choose a Good Charity
Unfortunately, not all charities are created equal. To do the most good, the best thing to do is choose your charity of choice wisely. This can be difficult but there are advice to help you make the best choice.
- Support Local Charities. Small doesn’t mean ineffective. Small charities can create big changes in the communities they are in. Start by looking for smaller, local charities that help people, animals, or the environment where you are.
- Use Charity Navigator. This useful tool gives you insight into the business side of the charity and quantifies the work they do and lets you know exactly how your money is being used.
- Support a charity you have used or have participated in. I know from experience just how helpful the USO is! It’s always one of the charities I recommend when people are looking to give back.
This Valentine’s Day give a Valentine’s Day gift that gives back! Use this holiday of love to help spread the love and make the world a better place by putting your dollars to work with a charity.
