All around us, the impact of climate change is being felt. You choose to live as softly upon the earth as possible, but there’s always that doubt, that niggling feeling that says, “Yes, but you could be doing so much more! What about composting? Why aren’t you zero waste yet? You really need to be biking everywhere not taking the car!” Sustainable living overwhelm and & envy creep in no matter what stage of your Eco-friendly lifestyle journey you are at. There are so many ways you could be making more of an impact it’s easy to get a heavy case of green living overwhelm. Fear not! You can keep these negative thoughts and feelings at bay!
Something is better than nothing.
Living an Eco-friendly, sustainable lifestyle isn’t an all or nothing affair. Of course, you’d love to be able to do ALL THE THINGS, but realistically sometimes that’s just not possible. The steps you are taking now, no matter how small they seem, all contribute to making the world a better place. Just think, if everyone just recycled plastics how much better the world would be! Those one steps, amplified by the actions of many have the ability to create lasting change. So embrace your small changes, embrace the actions you are taking right now. You are taking action, that’s more than some people are doing. You are one of the do’ers, one of the helpers, one of the ones trying to make the world a better place with actions you take every day. You.are.awesome. Don’t let sustainable living overwhelm & envy tell you otherwise!

Perfection is an Illusion.
What does it mean to have the perfect green lifestyle? To live off the grid in remote wilderness and rely only upon yourself? To live in a passive house with a zero waste lifestyle? Or maybe it’s a an urban homestead with edible landscapes and chickens. Those are all someone’s ideal lifestyle. They are all valid lifestyles. There is one thing they are not though: for everyone. Your life isn’t like theirs, no matter how similar it might seem at first. Embrace the lifestyle that resonates with you the most, embrace the changes that you can make to your life now, and let go of the need to be perfect. It’s an illusion, an idea to chase, an idea to inspire, but not necessarily an idea that is attainable by you or others. Create your own imperfect, perfect lifestyle.
It’s a journey, not a destination.
Your sustainable lifestyle will change as your life changes. It will change as technology advances, and as knowledge of the natural world increases. Don’t expect to do it all at once. Take steps one at a time. Know that no matter what steps you have taken, there’s always more you can take. But remember, just because there are more steps to go doesn’t mean your journey doesn’t matter. Build a foundation with simple habits and actions that can lead to bigger or more steps down the road. You can always find a road and drive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay where you are, or pull off to rest.
Embrace your sustainable living journey for what it is and the possibility it holds. Cast aside the expectations and the temptation to give into feelings of sustainable living overwhelm & envy. Your journey is valid, your lifestyle and choices are valid. Do what you can, with what you have, and make this journey yours. It’s not societies’, it’s not anyone else, it’s yours. Make it a good one.
