How did your life end up like this? It wasn’t what you had planned at all. Now you stand not knowing how to proceed, or where to turn. Were those dreams you had just flights of fancy? Or can you really pursue them despite the things that stand in your way? How do you get over feeling stuck in your life?
Sound familiar? Maybe it’s just me but I run into these thoughts quite frequently. I never thought my life would turn out how it has. I never prepared for this, or wanted this. It just wasn’t in the plan! Unfortunately, the Universe doesn’t care about our plans. Life happens, and you find yourself in a situation you never thought you’d be in, wondering WTF do you do now? Give in and give up? Do you fight? Or do you find new, different goals? I can’t tell you the answers. I can, however, give you 5 tips that you can use to find the answers you seek for yourself, so you can overcome feeling stuck in your life, and live the life you want.
1 | Go For a Walk (Preferably in Nature)
Studies have shown that nature is good for your mind & body. Physical activity is great for giving yourself a break from your inner dialog. It’s a good way to focus on the physical, the feeling of the pavement under your feet, the breeze, the sunlight, and the sights and sounds you encounter on your walk. Let yourself get immersed in the hear and now, and if only for a short time, release the troubles that cloud your mind. Enjoy the state of just being. Enjoy the surroundings around you, get out of your own mind for a few moments. Sometimes it’s this simple act that can help you stop feeling stuck in your life.
2 | Meditate
Meditation is a wonderful tool that can help you find focus and clarity. It can help you learn to live more in the moment, and overcome anxiety. The most wonderful thing is you don’t need any thing special to give it a try. Just a comfortable spot to sit or lay down and a few moments of quiet. There are lots of resources to help you learn to meditate, but one of my favorite’s is Headspace. They have a great free 10 day program that helps you learn how to meditate starting with just 10 minutes a day. Meditation can help you relax, it can also help you develop a new perspective on things. You can incorporate it into your spirituality if you wish, or not. Whatever works best for you.
3 | Talk to Someone
There’s a quote that I always have loved:
“These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb.”
― Najwa Zebian
Share your worries, concerns and disappointments with others in your life. You don’t have to carry those burdens alone. Sometimes the simple act of talking about it with someone else, or even writing about it in a journal, can help alleviate the struggles that burden your mind and soul. Reach out to others and let them support you, conversely if one of your friends or family is struggling reach out to them too. Reaching out and admitting you need help can be the most challenging part!
4 | Let it Go
Sometimes the hardest lesson to learn is to let it go. I struggle with this myself so very much. There are lots of things in life that cannot be controlled. I don’t get to decide where we will live once our time in Korea is over. That is something I rage against, and I know…I know I shouldn’t. That it will change nothing, there’s no point. Yet I can’t bring myself to let go…to admit defeat like that. Yet holding on to those feelings do not help me. I need to let it go. I know this. It is so very hard, and I wish I had some useful tips to give but I don’t. All you have to do is let it go, but the simplest things are often the hardest.
5 | Make a Plan
Can’t stop thinking about it? Well make a plan to make it happen. You may not be able to control everything, but you CAN control your own actions and mentality. Sure, maybe you have to take small steps to get there, and maybe you can’t do it all at once, but you can plan. Think about every step you need to take in order to reach your goal. Break down each step into easily achievable actions you can take. Write it down if you want. Check them off as you complete each and every step.
Take this blog for example. It didn’t pop out of no where. It was something I couldn’t stop thinking about for some time. One day, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. So I made a plan. Everything I needed to do was on it, from getting domain name, to planning content, planning social media accounts, creating branding, designing a logo, monetization strategies…everything! One by one, over the course of a month, I did everything on that list and a blog was born! It’s still got a long way to go, but I’ve accomplished more thanks to my planning than I would have if I just sat around feeling hopeless. Sometimes things are not as out of reach as you may think. So figure out what you need to do, to make that dream of yours happen.
