The holiday season is quickly approaching. That means holiday stress is building too! The holidays may be all about fun, family, and togetherness, but there is still ample amounts of stress that can fall on your shoulders. From managing regular life, to ensuring holiday gatherings go off without a hitch there’s stress coming at you from many points. Make this holiday season less stressful by giving yourself the gift of self care. By taking care of yourself, you ensure that you have the energy to fulfill your obligations and take care of others. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and now is the time to fill yours.
Melt holiday stress away with some of my favorite self-care activities, or use them as inspiration to create your own. The most important aspect of self-care is that it empowers you, that it re-energizes you, and helps you recharge yourself. Your self-care doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s, so if the suggestions here don’t resonate with you, that’s fine! Follow your heart and give your soul what it really craves.
I recently discovered Yin Yoga. It’s a soothing yoga practice that is all about surrender. Yin yoga is about long slow stretches, and is amazingly relaxing, and it’s my new favorite form of yoga! I highly recommend it for helping you handle stress. After a nice session of Yin Yoga I feel so balanced, so calm! Give it a try. Or if you know it’s not for you, make time for your own favorite form of yoga. Even a quick sun salutation does wonders to improve your mood.
Here’s a great & quick video from Yoga with Adriene about Yin Yoga to help get you started!
During the holiday season, it’s so easy to focus on treating everyone else. But what about you? Take time to indulge here and there for yourself too. It needn’t be extravagant. Go for that latte, treat yourself to a manicure, window shop at your favorite store for no reason other than because you want to! Give to others, but also honor yourself and all the work you do and your holiday stress will melt away.
Meditate The Stress Away
If yoga isn’t your thing, meditation might be for you! I know, if you are new to it, it’s hard! Your mind just won’t shut up and all you can do is think “am I doing this right? Oh, look, I’m doing it! Wait, no I’m not..be quiet self!”, trust me, I know how it is. But meditation has many benefits and can help you deal with stress in a healthy way. I highly suggest checking out Headspace if you are new to meditation. It’s a great app to help you get started.
Yes, its’ the holiday season, but that doesn’t mean you have to attend every gathering you are invited to, or help out every holiday event that asks you to. You can still enforce your own boundaries and needs. Don’t bend to the pressure to spread yourself too thin. If you are feeling worn out and overextended see what you can cut out of your schedule to give yourself a break, or alter your plans to be easier. For example, if you’re bringing food to a potluck go for something easy, or dare I say it, from the store or bakery. Take the shortcuts! That’s what they are there for.
Remember What It’s All About
It’s easy to flounder in the consumerism that surrounds the holiday season. That’s not what it’s really all about, is it? It’s not about having the fanciest holiday parties, or spending the most on presents, or whatever else. The holiday season is about spending time with those who matter most to you. It’s about being thankful for what you have, and embracing it. When you are dealing with holiday stress, remember the reasons you are doing this, the real reasons, and come back to that. Don’t let yourself get lose balance! Cut out the things that don’t support your real reason for enjoying the holiday season.
Bonus Tip: Plan Your Holiday Season
Not planning can be a big holiday stressor. Doing things last minute can really make your holiday stress shoot sky high! So take a few moments to plan our your holiday season. Set yourself some deadlines, and think a head a little to make sure you get everyone done in an efficient manner. There’s lots of time to prepare for holiday events, if you take a few moments to think a head. For example, pick up those holiday essentials one at a time as you visit the grocery store each week. A turkey here, a ham there, it adds little to your weekly shopping budget and time comittment but avoids having to make those special trips because you realized last minute you don’t have half the things you need to make that recipe.
