The birds have returned, their calls once more echo from the trees and bushes. The sun’s rays are getting stronger, and warmth once again returns to the land. The days are getting longer, no more does twilight creep in during the late afternoon. The evenings are filled with more light. Spring is coming! The spring equinox is right around the corner. Soon the dark and light hours will be equal once more for a brief time before spring and summer take over filling the day with more hours of light than dark. The end of winter and the return of spring is a wonderful time of year filled with the promise of new life and new beginnings. It’s something that should be celebrated! …but how? How can you celebrate the spring equinox? Here are some of my favorite ways to welcome back the spring and celebrate the spring equinox.
1 | Plant Something
Plant a garden, a window box, or even just one pot. The time to plant and welcome new green life to the world is now. Embrace the time of year and grow something. Anything! Herbs, flowers, or vegetables! There’s something for everyone. Herbs are easy to grow no matter where you live, even if you have no land for a garden. They are perfect for new gardeners and give you delicious flavors to brighten any dish.
2 | Spring Festivals
Check out your local festivals! People can’t wait to get out and celebrate after a winter cooped up indoors. Seasonal festivals this time of year include Maple Festivals and more! It’s a great way to get out and have a fun and quite often, tasty time! It’s a great way to enjoy the best of what the season has to offer.
3 | Clean Up
It’s not just your home that needs a good spring cleaning, the Earth does too! With local holidays like Vermont’s Green Up Day, national holidays like Earth Day and international days like Earth Hour, the time for environmental action is now. So get out there to your local park, or even your street and pick up some litter. Or even better, make it a habit. Any time you see a piece of litter, no matter where you are, pick it up and properly dispose of it. Your small actions will make a big difference. Start with your home, your yard, or common area. How can you make it a bit cleaner? How can you take care of your own small bit of the earth a bit more?
4 | Eat Seasonally
Spring is arguably one of the best times to eat seasonal foods. Strawberries, asparagus and more are all in season this time of year! No better time to enjoy these spring foods than right now, especially if they are local!

5 | Decorate for Spring
Spring flowers. After a long cold winter is there anything better? Decorate your home with things of the season, now is the time to get your favorite spring blooms. Soon the cherry blossoms, forsythia, crocus, and daffodils will be blooming. They are perfect to use in decorating your home seasonally. You also may want to include eggs or other seasonal motifs.
