Making your home smell like fall is easy and you probably have everything you need to do it in your pantry alread! So before you dish out money for expensive essential oil blends, give the humble simmering spice a try! What’s a simmering spice? It’s a mixture of spices or herbs that you simmer on your stovetop, candle holder, or woodstove. They are easy to make with ingredients you already have and make your home smell amazing without wax or essential oils.
Is there anything better than the smell of an apple pie cooking on a chilly fall day? I don’t think so! Make your house smell that good with this easy simmering spice blend, no baking required! All you have to do is toss this blend of apple pie spices & apple into the water in a heatproof vessel and soon your home will smell just like fall. Best of all it’s cheap, and everything is compostable once you are done!
Apple Pie Fall Simmering Spice
- 1 part Cinnamon
- 1/2 part Cloves
- 1/4 part allspice
- 1 or 1/2 apple (fresh or dried) Depending on how large a vessel you use
Fill a heat-safe vessel with water. Add your spices & sliced apple. Bring water to a boil then lower heat (if using a stove) and let simmer. As water evaporates you can add more water.
Be sure to remove it from heat once the water level is too low to prevent burning the spices & apple and causing a fire hazard. Do not leave unattended, especially around pets & children!
Simmering spices are especially good for colder months if you have a wood stove. Keep a pot on your woodstove filled with water and herbs and you will not only add more humidity to dry winter air, but your home will smell amazing. I love simmering spices because they are so easy to make and require nothing you can’t already find in your pantry. You can mix and match blends to suit your needs or what you have on hand.
If you happen to have whole spices on hand I do recommend using those. Ground spices work just fine (and they are what I had so it’s what I used for my apple pie fall simmering spice blend), but I think the whole ones hold up better if you are going to simmer for a longer time. Pre-mixed spice blends also make a fantastic DIY gift for friends and family for the holidays. This apple pie fall simmering spice blend is perfect both for fall and Thanksgiving, but also as a Christmas or Yule gift. Nothing says the holidays like a thoughtful handmade gift that makes your home smell festive and inviting.
