The warm spring sunshine was shining brightly outside. It was warm, finally, after a long winter. A light spring breeze brought the smell of fresh growing things, and flowers. I threw open my windows and welcomed in the freshness of spring. The dull, stale air accumulated in my apartment from months of being locked up dissipated. Fresh, bright spring air was all that remained. One of my cats, an orange tiger, ran from open window to open window. Sniffing the fresh air, feeling the fresh energies the season brought. After a few hours, once my cat now slept peacefully in the window sill, as the sun lowered in the sky and the early spring chill set in once more I closed the windows. The spring breeze was gone, yet the fresh energy it brought remained in my small apartment.
Just as you need to clean your home physically to keep it clean, so too do you need to clean the energy that dwells within it. Have you ever walked into someone’s home and felt stifled (or maybe even your own)? Or walked into another home and felt nothing but peace, and serenity? Everyone’s home has it’s own energy. You can control it, but it takes action and intent. Negative energy in your home can make it feel stifling, stagnant, or stressful. If you’ve noticed more family disagreements or felt down, it might be time to welcome in some fresh, positive energy! Over the winter it’s easy to accumulate negative energy from all the stress, conflicts and daily struggles that occur over time. Spring brings the perfect opportunity to clean out that energy and replace it with fresh, new energy to revitalize your home. How? It’s easier than you might think? Here are 5 ways you can bring new energy into your home, and ditch the old, oppressive negative energy it’s accumulated over time.
1 | Open the Windows
In the spring, one of my favorite things is the very first time it’s warm enough to open the windows! Warm sunlight, fresh air all sweeping through my home, banishing the negativity accumulated from a winter spent cooped up inside. This is one of the easiest things you can do to welcome new energy into your home: open the windows. Go through your home, and even for just 15 minutes let the fresh air from outside sweep through your home and rid it of the negative energies accumulated there. This works best on slightly windy, warm spring days. Let the wind whip, let it swirl through your home, sweeping up the stale air and replacing it with fresh air.
2 | Incense or Smudging
I love incense. It’s cheap and easy to find, stick and cone incense is everywhere. All you need is a heat safe container to burn it on. It also comes in a variety of smells, perfect for any occasion. Sage is one of the best incense to use to rid yourself or your home of negative energy. It’s long been associated with purification by many cultures. Smudging is similar to using incense but it will make A LOT more smoke. Sage bundles are one of the most common smudging implements and available at most metaphysical shops or you can make your own.
3 | Candles
Candles are another, less smokey option to help purify your space. Again, sage is a great scent that can be used to purify your space. Candles are also easy to find, and come in their own fire safe containers. Select beeswax or soy candles to avoid the nasty chemicals paraffin waxes produce when burned.
4 | Essential Oils
Essential oils are the perfect option for anyone who either cannot use candles or incense due to housing regulations, personal preference, or breathing issues. Essential oils are easy to find, and come in a variety of smells. You can use them in different ways from creating room freshening sprays to using a diffuser. An added benefit of oils is that you can use them in your cleaning supplies as well, adding some extra cleaning power as well as energy cleansing power to your every day cleaning.
5 | Gemstones
Gemstones are beautiful and like herbs, have associations with different energies. Hematite, for example is very good at grounding. So it’s a good option to help keep your home’s energy comforting and grounded. Use it in your decor or keep it on your person either in your pocket or as a piece of jewelry. Quartz is another easy to find gem that’s good at deflecting negative energy. You may be able to find natural quartz outside your home or in your garden! Place quartz crystals around your home to help repel negative energies.
The humble broom has a long history of being used not only to remove physical dirt, but to purify and clean the energy of a place as well. The physical act of sweeping can be turned into a metaphysical act as well with a simple visualization. Next time you are sweeping or mopping your home’s floors visualize your broom or mop sweeping away black, negative energy, leaving only clean white, silver or gold energy in it’s place. Dispose of your dust and debris as you normally would, but try to remove it from your home asap to get that negativity out of your home. (If you want to be a bit more modern about it, you can also try this with a vacuum. Just remember to empty the bag/canister after you are done and remove the trash from your home.)
With a few simple actions you can turn your home into the sanctuary that you’ve always wanted it to be! Bringing new energy into your home is easy and helps your family life a more peaceful and positive life.
