Cleaning the toilets sucks, but you can make it suck a little less with this easy and CHEAP 3 ingredient toilet bowl cleaner. What happens when you can’t get your favorite cleaners? Well, I found myself in that place several months ago. I love Seventh Generation’s cleaning products, and had just run out of their fantastic toilet bowl cleaner. I looked at my local stores, but I couldn’t find anything but bleach laden, traditional cleaners. I was super bummed…I hated the idea of using toxic cleaners that would eventually end up in the water ways. So what to do?
Pinterest of course.
I searched high and low for natural toilet bowl cleaner recipes. I needed it to be easy, cheap, and as natural as possible. I read many different recipes and eventually settled on one that sounded good. It was so easy, and only has 3 ingredients! If you’ve got baking soda, borax, and essential oils (which are option) then you can make this natural toilet bowl cleaner!

What you need:
- A bowl for mixing
- A spoon
- Baking soda
- Essential Oils, Tea tree is a good choice for it’s antibacterial and antiviral properties. (Buy Here)
- A glass container with sealable lid to store your cleaner in.
I used a re-purposed honey jar for my container…no I didn’t even bother to take the label off, I just washed it well and let it try. For essential oils, I went with tea tree. Why? Mostly because I had it on hand, but also because tea tree oil is antibacterial and antiviral, so it’s a really good addition to any homemade cleaning product. HOWEVER, tea tree oil can be toxic to cats, so please keep it away from them!
The Recipe: 3 Ingredient Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner:
- Equal parts baking soda & borax
- 25 drops of essential oil
That’s it. It’s so easy to make, it will take you maybe 5 minutes. I used 3/4 cup of each baking soda and borax, and that will make me a several month supply.
Step by Step:
Measure 3/4 cup of baking soda and pour into your mixing bowl. Don’t just dump it in like me as it will make a bit of a mess if you do that.
Measure 3/4 cup of borax and add to the mixing bowl with the baking soda.
Add 25 drops of essential oil
Mix well to combine. Be sure to crush the little chunks of essential oil laden powder that will form so everything is well incorporated.
Add your mixture to your storage container. A wide-mouth glass jar works well. I used a repurposed jar. You want to store it in a cool and dry place, where children and pets cannot get to it.
Note: Please make sure you keep this away from kids and pets/animals. It may be more natural than conventional cleaners, but it’s NOT non-toxic. Also keep the container tightly closed to prevent moisture from causing it to clump.
How to Use:
Sprinkle 3 spoonfuls around your toilet bowl, then scrub as your normally would with any other cleaner. Flush, and enjoy your fresh smelling, clean toilet!
